A Batty Friday

After running errands all morning, the children and I came home and discovered...
A BAT IN OUR HOME!
The bat was hanging upside down from the door handles in Jon's office.
STEP 1. I quickly got the children and the dog out of the house! Henry was really needing his nap, the mosquitoes were ready to feast on us and it was a HUMID 88 degrees, so I put the children in the air conditioned car and started a DVD.

STEP 2. I went in with a broom. The darn bat had moved to my wall fountain and had it's wings spread. There was NO FREAKING WAY I was going to attempt to hit it with my measly bitty broom.

STEP 3. We drove down to Jon's grandparents' home. They helped me with a few accessories.
STEP 4. I went in my home again...this time armored. (I also wore a heavy winter coat and gloves). The crazy bat was gone. G.O.N.E! I looked all over the house and no sign.

STEP 5. I called my hubs at work. He told me to stay out of our home until he came home from work. Oh my....4 hours!

STEP 6. We stayed away all afternoon, going here and there. Finally I drove to my parents' home and got a few fishing nets.

STEP 7. We came home and still no sign of that bat. There was ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that the children and I were going to sleep in a home with a potential loose bat (because if asleep, a person wouldn't feel a bat bite). Jon and I went through our home over and over.

STEP 8. I was so frazzled, so I decided to start up the sweeper and go through every single room moving furniture, sweeping trim, lights...everything. Once in Emily's room, I decided to put up some new artwork, so I went to my art room. I must have caused a ruckus because Jon yelled that the CRAZY bat flew out from behind the TV! He ran one way and told me to run the other....umm without any ammunition? I don't think so! I then noticed the cats looking at the kitchen floor. I yelled for Jon and his handy dandy net. PRESTO! Bat caught! And...That FRIGHTENING bat actually hissed and showed it's teeth at us! YIKES!

STEP 9. Jon released it outside, much to my dismay. (Don't worry...I took these pix thru our front door. I would have rather swallowed hot coals than be this close to that nutty bat). I really wanted to take it to our local university to have it tested for rabies.
Now I feel violated.
I have started sweeping and dusting EVERYTHING in my home!
I'll be up all night, but it's worth it!
And on another note, remember last week when the dermatologist cut some of my neck? I got the results today. Pre-cancerous. Lovely. I already have an appt. next month for the wonderful doctor to take some more of my neck away.

BUT...today is Jon's grandparent's 60th wedding anniversary! How amazing! They still say how in love they are and they inspire me so much!
Here's to 60 years of love, a batless home, and a thinner neck! Cheers! :)

  2. First off... love the new background on the site. Second... so sorry to hear about the pre-cancer results, but at least you were proactive and caught it early. Thinking of you!

I remember the bats that used to fly through cold air dorm at Pi Phi at night and the dead one we found in the basement. Agh!

Hysterical photos and I love your helmet!

Best to you all! Did you get my message about the race?
